Palm Beach Zoo to close due to the rising threat of Zika

Palm Beach, Florida (AP) The Florida Zoo will close on Monday, just two days after the first cases of Zika in the U.S. were reported in Florida.

The zoo, which is about 30 miles north of Palm Beach in Lake Mary, is the nation’s oldest and largest.

It was founded in 1876 by two French-born owners and was a pioneer of zoo-themed attractions, including the popular Palm Beach Gardens zoo.

It closed last month amid the Zika outbreak.

The Zoo, with about 4,000 animals, is one of the country’s largest zoos and home to a collection of more than 600,000 species of animals.

Zoo officials said Monday they will keep the zoo open for a new season.

They said the zoo will be closed from March 1 through July 1.
