A giant tortoise has been found in a San Francisco zoo, a rare find in the city and a symbol of California’s wild west days.
The zoo’s conservation director said it was only the second time he had seen a giant tortoises, but he said they were not uncommon.
The tortois were found Sunday in a park near a former circus, and zoo officials are hoping to get a crane to hoist the animals to safety.
The giant tortos, about two feet (60 centimeters) long and weighing up to 1,100 pounds, are the first known giant tortoiset to be found in the San Francisco Zoo.
Their numbers are believed to be low because they live in the desert and don’t migrate to larger cities.
